Your back pain is more than just physical

What if I told you there is no such thing as a slipped disk.

Yes, you may have seen a model on the doctor’s desk, with a disk lying next to the model of the spinal cord.

Also, you may not be aware, this is physically impossible, there is absolutely no way your disk could slip out.

Your doctor may also have an x-ray in front of him showing small cracks or small bulges on the disc.

Then, with confidence, diagnosed that the cracks in your spine is the ONLY reason you are in so much pain.


Dr Sarno states, after ruling out any major problems in the spine, such as a major fracture or a disease.

He says “We all have these abnormalities on our spines; even people who have absolutely no problems with their backs have cracks and bulges on the spine”

Dr Sarno explains…

It is an interesting fact that the overwhelming majority of emotional and mental activity occurs below the level of consciousness. The human mind is something like an iceberg. The part that we are aware of, the conscious mind represents a very small part of the total. It is in the subconscious mind that all of the complicated processing goes on…

Let me explain further…

The pain you are feeling is very real, you can feel it!

But! The cause is in your own mind!

Most of us who suffer from back pain have a tendency to repress our emotions deep down into our unconscious mind.

Such as….

  • Stress
  • Anger
  • Fear
  • Guilt

However, all this bottled up emotion has to come out, and most likely will manifest as pain in the body.

Now, you may not be aware of how your emotions affect the mind and body.

That’s ok; I have got your back (sorry for the pun)

With that said, let’s move on!

Healing your back pain starts with awareness of your emotions

But for some of us, simply knowing the fact that we have tremendous healing power is enough for the pain to disappear completely.

Dr Sarno comments, around 95% of his patients that went through his programme or read his book Healing Back Pain healed themselves completely without the need for any physiotherapy.

So the first step is to start looking at your back pain in a different way.

Let’s take our friend Jennet.

After listening to Dr Sarno, Jennet realised the cause of her pain was in her head (unconscious)

And also knew that she had repressed emotions that were causing all sorts of problems in her body.

But the simple fact is that Jennet had no idea what emotions were causing her back problems.

And if we are quite honest, most of do not know either!

So, Dr Sarno had a little chat with Jennet, he found that Jennet’s perfectionism was the cause for her back pain.

He explained that her constant push for everything to be perfect is making her angry inside.

And let’s not forget Keith,

Keith has a tendency to hold everything in and not let anyone know what he is feeling, even when he is in pain, he just keeps smiling.

Also, Keith is always trying to keep everyone happy and put his personal feeling to the side.

Again Dr Sarno explained, Keith is just holding back all that anger, and unconsciously is absolutely furious about it.

So! All Dr Sarno was doing is to look at Jennet’s and Keith’s personalities, and from there finding out the emotion behind the pain, in their case the emotion was anger.

So what is your personality telling you?

Here is the list of what Dr Sarno feels are the most common causes for back pain:

  • Striving for perfection
  • Always working hard
  • Worrying about everything
  • Very competitive
  • Low self-esteem
  • Critical of themselves

This could also affect the way you live your life on day to day basis, and most likely you do not even know it is happening!

Also, what you believe is possible has an important part to play in how you feel and cope with pain on a daily basis.

How Your Beliefs And Conditioning Affect The Way You Feel Pain.

Do you trust your doctor?

More than likely the answer is yes!

You make an appointment to see your doctor because you have been suffering from back pain.

You have tried everything else, but nothing has worked!

You have had enough!

So he gives you a full assessment and maybe had an X-ray or MRI done to see if he can see any major problems in your back.

But more often than not there is nothing more than small cracks or bulges, which Dr Sarno states as normal anomalies.

Then after ruling out every possibility and knowing that you have tried nearly everything without any success.

The doctor may say something like…

“Your back is not going to get any better; I will give you some pain killers to help the pain”

“There is nothing more I can do for you, you have tried it all”

Now, how would you feel after basically being told, you are just going to have to live with it?


Or just angry, that nothing can be done.

But you believe what has been said, as fact!

He is a doctor after all!

If you did not know any better, you would believe there is no hope.

“Accept the doctor diagnosis but not the prognosis”

Instead of feeling fearful of your own back.

As Dr Sarno suggests,

When we are fearful of our own backs, we start to change the way we go about our daily lives.

We start to create unconscious habits or beliefs around our back pain.

For example…

We go to sit down, we get a twinge. So then, we start to create an unconscious belief.

That is, every time I sit down I will get a painful twinge in the back!

So, now we start avoiding soft chairs, constantly moving around in different positions or try to avoid sitting all together!

In fact, every time you experience pain while doing a certain activity. You will start to unconsciously create habits that try to avoid the feeling of pain.

But the good news is!

If you are aware of what is happening you can stop the habits before they start controlling the way you live your life.

To put it simply,

If you have pain in your body, and the doctor has ruled out any major problems.

Then it is more than likely you are repressing anger deep in your unconscious.

That’s all well and good Mark!

How do we deal with all this anger?

How Anger Manifests As Pain In The Body And How To Deal With It

While we are bottling up our emotions our nervous system activates our fight, flight or freeze response without us being consciously aware of it.

As this is going on, oxygen in our blood is directed to all the major organs ready to deal with any threat.

And this means the smaller parts of the body such as our muscles, nerves, joints and tendons receive very little oxygen.

This all creates tension and physical pain in the body. It’s really that simple!

This all comes from when we were cave men/women dealing with the very real threat of a sabre tooth tiger attacking us from anywhere, anytime!

Of course, we do not have to deal with all this sort of nonsense nowadays. We have other problems!

  • Striving for perfection
  • Always working hard
  • Worrying about everything
  • Very competitive
  • Low self-esteem
  • Critical of themselves


But the fight, flight response is still within us. Still protecting us!

So, how do you control this natural response?

In short, through your breathing!

Now, I am talking about slow deep breathing.

There are some techniques that help you control your breathing, Such as, Hypnosis, meditation or even visualisation.
